A visit to Batu Caves is an amazing cultural experience. As local guides, here is our essential advice for your trip.
The first thing you’ll see is the 272 steps, painted in a vibrant rainbow of colors. Climbing them is the main part of the experience. It’s a bit of a workout, but most people find it manageable in 10-15 minutes. Expert Tip: The dress code is strictly enforced as this is an active religious site. Both men and women must have their knees and shoulders covered. Shorts, short skirts, and tank tops are not allowed. If you forget, you can rent a sarong at the entrance for a small fee (around RM 5). It’s best to just come prepared with long pants or a skirt.

The caves are a series of limestone caverns, but their main importance is as one of the most popular Hindu shrines outside of India. The giant golden statue at the entrance is Lord Murugan, a Hindu deity, and at 140 feet (42.7m), it’s the tallest in the world. The main “Temple Cave” at the top of the steps is a place of worship. You’ll see shrines, priests, and devotees. The site is especially famous for the Thaipusam festival (usually in late January or early February), when millions of people visit for a massive, colorful celebration.

You will see dozens (maybe hundreds) of macaque monkeys. They live on the steps and around the caves. While they are fun to watch, be careful! Expert Tip: Do not bring any food or plastic bags with you. The monkeys are very bold and will try to steal anything they think is food. Keep your water bottle inside a bag, hold your phone tightly, and do not wear loose-hanging sunglasses. It’s best to just admire them from a safe distance and avoid interacting with them.
