George Town, Penang
Penang is an island of endless discovery. As local experts, here are our tips for the must-do experiences.
A trip to KL isn’t complete without seeing its world-famous landmarks. The Petronas Twin Towers are the star attraction. You can’t go up without a ticket, and they sell out weeks in advance, so book online as early as possible!
The best photo spot is from the KLCC Park fountains, which have a light show around 8 PM. For a different view, the KL Tower (Menara KL) offers a 360-degree observation deck.
We recommend the outdoor “Sky Deck” for the best photos in its glass “Sky Box.” Finally, visit Merdeka Square (Independence Square). It’s a free, open-air square where Malaysian independence was declared.
It’s surrounded by beautiful historic buildings like the Sultan Abdul Samad Building and is best seen in the cooler morning or evening.

When the sun goes down, KL comes alive. The one place you must visit is Jalan Alor, the most famous food street in Malaysia. It’s a chaotic, wonderful, and delicious street filled with hundreds of stalls.
Expert Tip: Be adventurous and try the barbecued chicken wings, fresh durian, and satay (grilled meat skewers). For a different vibe, the Changkat Bukit Bintang area is packed with popular bars and clubs.
For a truly stunning view, visit a rooftop bar like the Heli Lounge Bar, a real helicopter pad that turns into a bar at night. It offers an open-air 360-degree view of the city.
…discover the city after dark in our Kuala Lumpur Night Attractions Guide.
KL is the perfect base for exploring the region. The most popular day trip is to the Batu Caves, a massive limestone hill with a Hindu temple inside. It’s only about a 30-minute drive, but be prepared to climb 272 colorful steps!
Remember to dress modestly (cover knees and shoulders). Another easy trip is to Putrajaya, Malaysia’s stunning modern capital, about 45 minutes away. It’s famous for its grand architecture and the beautiful “Pink Mosque” (Putra Mosque).
If you have more time, the Genting Highlands (about 1 hour away) offers cool mountain air, theme parks, and the new Awana SkyWay cable car.
