Sabah is an adventurer’s dream. As local experts, here are our tips for the top experiences.
Mount Kinabalu is the 4,095-meter (13,435 ft) crown jewel of Sabah. While our day tours visit Kinabalu Park at its base, climbing to the summit is a major 2-day, 1-night undertaking. Expert Tip: You must book a climbing permit and a guide many months in advance, as permits are extremely limited. The climb is non-technical (no ropes needed) but is very physically demanding due to the altitude. Most climbers start in the dark on day 2 to reach the summit for sunrise.
The Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park (TARP) is just a 15-minute boat ride from Kota Kinabalu. It’s a group of 5 beautiful islands. Our tours often focus on Sapi Island and Manukan Island. Expert Tip: Sapi Island is smaller and has great snorkeling right off the beach (and some big monitor lizards!). Manukan Island is larger with more facilities and a longer stretch of beach. We highly recommend trying the “Coral Flyer,” a 250m zipline that flies you from one island to the other!

Kota Kinabalu (or “KK”) is a vibrant, modern city. The Tanjung Aru Beach is world-famous for its incredible sunsets. The Filipino Market is a bustling night market where you can try amazing, fresh, grilled seafood for a very low price. For culture, the beautiful Kota Kinabalu City Mosque (The Floating Mosque) is a must-see, especially for photos when it’s lit up at night.
