What to Know Before You Visit

As local tour experts, we want to help you have the most respectful and enjoyable visit.

The Elephant Encounter

This is not a performing circus. The sanctuary is a home for elephants rescued from all over Malaysia. The main activities are educational. You’ll watch a video about their conservation work and then get to participate in a feeding session, where you can hand-feed fruits like bananas and papaya to the elephants.

Expert Tip: The popular activity of bathing with the elephants in the river has been stopped to give the elephants more space and a more natural, stress-free life. You can still watch the elephants enjoy their bath time from a safe distance.

What to Prepare

A visit to the sanctuary is a visit to the jungle. Expert Tip: Wear light, comfortable clothes (it’s hot and humid) and good walking shoes. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of insect repellent. You should also bring a waterproof bag for your camera and a change of clothes, just in case of a sudden rain shower.

Ethical Considerations

It’s important to choose an ethical sanctuary. Kuala Gandah is a government-run center focused on relocating elephants that have lost their habitat to palm oil plantations. Expert Tip: Always listen to the guides (mahouts). Never yell, run, or use a flash on your camera, as this can scare the animals. The goal is to observe these gentle giants in a calm, respectful, and safe environment.
